Plans Unveiled for World-Class Design Museum

31/01/2012

We were excited to hear of The Design Museum’s plans to create the world’s leading museum of design and architecture at the former Commonwealth Institute building in Kensington, London.

Joining the V&A, Science Museum, Natural History Museum, Royal College of Art and Serpentine Gallery in Kensington’s cultural quarter, the new Design Museum will become a world class centre for design, nurturing British talent and its international influence on design of all kinds.

It is proposed that the new museum – which is an £80 million project – will open to the public in 2014, giving the Design Museum three times more space to showcase its unique collection.  The museum aims to double its visitor numbers to 500,000 a year, and will greatly expand its education and public events programme with state of the art facilities.

You can read more about this story here.

It’s great to see investment like this in arts and culture, and even better that the opening date coincides with the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.  2014 looks set to be a great year for UK tourism, that’s for sure!
