Cambridge Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology Reopens!

The Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology at the University of Cambridge was declared open at noon today, having been closed for just over a year whilst a major restoration project took place. We spoke to the Exhibition Coordinator, Dr Mark Elliott about the redevelopment.

“With a 300% increase in visitors over the last 5 years, we felt that the museum was long overdue a restoration to increase accessibility and help us to create something more like the public institution that we feel the museums deserve to be.

So with funding mainly from the Li Ka Shing Foundation and the DCMS-Wolfson Fund, we commenced a project to completely redevelop the ground floor, giving us a new front door with reception area and shop, a new temporary exhibition space and new archaeology galleries.

We think the new space looks fantastic and are delighted with the finished results. It is brighter, airier, and generally a much more pleasant space to be in. We’re also looking forward to being able to do a lot more with out collections thanks to the TESS Demountable cases we got for our temporary space.”

The full interview with Mark is in the latest edition of Showcase magazine which can be downloaded from our website, or requested from Lesley –
