Jim Gets Career Ready!

19/10/2017

Career Ready is a UK wide charity linking employers with schools and colleges to open up the world of work to young people.

Offering a structured programme of employer engagement they enable schools and colleges to meet their statutory duty for careers. They work with experts in education and business to develop high quality, employer-endorsed materials, which deliver a set of Skills for Career Success to help students compete with the best in the country.

Two years ago, our Director Jim joined the Career Ready mentor team at James Young High School in Livingston, not far from our main Headquarters. Jim was paired with pupil Zoe who had earned her place on the programme after the demanding selection process. Together they have taken part in various masterclasses, workshops and sessions put on by the Career Ready team for West Lothian. This included a 4 week internship where Zoe joined ClickNetherfield as part of our Procurement Team – a demanding and fast-paced role that threw her in at the deep end and served well in developing her skills for future employment.

Following her business internship and masterclasses, Zoe’s confidence has grown hugely and she was invited, alongside Jim, to speak to a new cohort of prospective mentors, from successful businesses across West Lothian – including two more of our very own ClickNetherfield employees! The pair spoke about their varying experiences throughout the programme, what had challenged them and what they’d enjoyed most about the programme amongst other things.

“I was unsure what was expected of me as a mentor when I started the Career Ready programme, however, once I got into it I really enjoyed the mentoring aspect of the programme and being able to impart some of my business knowledge onto a young person. Seeing Zoe’s confidence grow throughout the process has been very rewarding and just left me thinking ‘I wish I had had a mentor when I was Zoe’s age!’”  – Jim, Director, ClickNetherfield

“When I started this whole process I was so nervous! But since my internship, my confidence has grown and now that I’ve known Jim a while I find it easier to come to him for balanced advice on the ‘working world’. The hardest part of the process has been undertaking mock interviews with ClickNetherfield managers that, at first, were brutal but in hindsight I have learnt so much from and even secured a Saturday job as a result! I am a lot more confident talking to new people and I know that when I put my mind to things I am capable of overcoming obstacles (and nerves) and achieving my goal!” – Zoe, James Young High School

They both gave a great presentation and you would never have known how nervous Zoe had been beforehand!

Jim and Zoe will be finishing up their programme at the end of this academic year but our Head of Project Management Stewart Reid and Elaine Cooper Cunningham, our Planning and Procurement Manager, have both been inspired to join the next programme, so we’ll be sure to keep you updated on their progress with their new mentees once the new course kicks off.
